If you are wondering how to get into construction with no prior experience, the good news is that the industry is actively looking for new workers. Australia's construction sector faces a skills shortage, and employers across residential, commercial and civil sectors are open to hiring people who are willing to learn, show up reliably, and work hard.
The most common entry point is a general labourer role. Labouring gives you exposure to multiple trades, teaches you how a construction site operates, and helps you decide which direction you want to take your construction career. It is unglamorous work, but it builds the foundational understanding that every other role relies on.
Getting your tickets and basic qualifications
Before you can step onto most Australian construction sites, you will need a White Card (general construction induction). This is a mandatory requirement under WHS legislation and can be completed in a single day through a registered training organisation. Some employers and sites also require additional inductions, first aid certification, or specific licences depending on the work being performed.
A
Certificate II in Skills for Work and Vocational Pathways is a useful stepping stone. It provides foundational skills in communication, numeracy, teamwork and workplace safety that employers value, and it can serve as a gateway to further qualifications in construction, trades, or supervision.

Building a construction career from the ground up
Once you are on site, seek for tasks outside your immediate scope, ask questions, and learn from the tradespeople and supervisors around you. The workers who progress fastest are the ones who show genuine interest in the industry.
From labouring, the pathways branch in many directions — trade apprenticeships, plant operation, supervision, estimating, contract administration, or project management. Each has its own qualification and licensing pathway. A construction career is one of the few fields where you can start with no experience and, with the right attitude and training, progress into six-figure management roles within a decade.
